Hot Topics

Hey all, I have 3 boys ages 4, 3, and 2. So I  know the hot topics surrounding those ages, but I'd like to hear feedback from you all about the hot topics facing your children based on their age, grade, interest, educational needs. Please comment back about the issues you would like to discuss on this blog!

  1. Hello. I am a mother of a 7 year old boy who is active in Cub Scouts with his father but otherwise likes to spend time playing video games (Wii & DS) and watching TV. I struggle with trying trying to help my son get his homework done before he gets engrossed in TV while trying to get dinner on the table. My son hates to read but has reading logs to do for school (one required and one optional but he earns pizza). I'd welcome suggestions from other Moms on these issues. Thanks.

  3. Hi Jodi,
I have 9 and 11 year-old boys. Wish I had some magical, easy answer, but I would encourage you to keep trying. My oldest HATED to read, but he also had to do reading logs for school, so plain and simple, I MADE him do it. Often with arguments and tears - sometimes mine ;-). But the practice made him better at reading, which eventually makes it more enjoyable. And keep searching for books that interest him (ask your librarian for suggestions). My son is in 5th grade now, and while he would still prefer TV over reading, I do find him occasionally reading on his own by choice, not because he has to (Yea!)
Regarding homework, I don't allow TV or video games until homework is done. I know that it's hard to supervise homework while trying to fix dinner. Although my boys are capable, they won't do it on their own unless I'm standing over them cracking the whip. They usually do homework at the kitchen table so that even though I'm getting dinner, they can ask me questions or I can intervene when they start goofing off. It's still a challenge, but it improves over time. Good luck!

  4. Hi all,
I have a son (12) and 2 daughters (9 and 7) and they too have lots of reading for school. Early on, we made reading family time, so we would all sit in the family room and read our own books but at the same time(including me and my husband). I've done this for years and it took persistence but now reading has become more of something they like to do rather than something they feel they have to do. Plus, it gives me time to read too!! :) Good Luck
