Affordable Summer Vacations

Well it seems like summer came and is now on it's way out with school being only a few weeks away! My family of 5 recently took a short but fun and very affordable vacation up to Lake Erie this past weekend. We stayed at a friends condo in Sandusky and then went to "Soak City" (the waterpark attached to Cedar Point), visited the lighthouse in Marblehead, and just played on the beach and in the lake. Has anyone else had a fun vacation or stay-cation this summer? If so share it with us and give us ideas for next year!

  1. We have a blended family of 7 (kids ages 10 - 1) and we are always looking for a bargain!

Here are a few things we did this summer during our "stay-cation":

Zoombezi Bay - way fun! Our 3 oldest are all tall enough to go on the big slides but even the 2 youngest ones had fun in the little kid area. We purchased the "gold" pass for each which is a little pricey but it lets you do Zoombezi, Jungle Jack's Landing and all year round at the zoo. After pricing it all out it was worth the cost.

Franklin Park Conservatory Blooms and Butterflies - simply beautiful. I will warn you that it's pretty warm inside but it was worth it. We went on family day and the kids got to make a cardboard bi-plane.

Park hopping - we have some great metro parks and one thing we've discovered is that the kids never tire of "new" play areas. So we took a day and visited 4 metro parks. All of them had different play areas and different things to see. They kids were wasted tired but they had a blast. I can list the parks we like if anyone is interested.

Olentangy Indian Caverns - the kids liked going underground and we got each of them (not the baby) a bag of "gems" to "mine". Overall a cute time.

Movie Tavern in Hilliard - we took the kids to an early matinee to see...Harry Potter, what else? They were so excited to be able to eat lunch and watch the movie and sit in those big seats.

The Woorks in Newark - it's like a mini-COSI but smaller and, well, much cheaper. The kids had fun running around and touching/playing with everything. Very inexpensive and a good way to waste a day.

Hope that gives you some ideas! We have done some other local activities like berry picking, pumpkin picking, hiking and I can post about those too, just let me know if you're interested.
